Today I want to talk to you about drifting through life. How just going with wherever the ocean current of life takes you may not be the best plan for your life.
According to Merrian-Webster, the definition of drifting is “to be carried slowly by a current of air or water.”
If you’ve recently found yourself saying out loud “What the hell am I doing with my life?” You may be a victim of the drift.
In his book “Awaken the Giant Within,” Tony Robbins uses a perfect analogy to describe what drifting through life can feel like. He calls it “The Niagara Syndrome.”
In describing the Niagara Syndrome Tony says “Too many of us don’t make the majority of our decisions consciously…in so doing, we pay a major price. In fact, most people live hat I call “The Niagara Syndrome.” I believe that life is like a river, and that most people jump on the river of life without ever really deciding where they want to end up.
So, in a short period of time, they get caught up in the current: current events, current fears, current challenges.
When they come to forks in the river, they don’t consciously decide where they want to go, or which is the right direction for them. They merely go with the flow. They become a part of the mass of people who are directed by the environment instead of by their own values. As a result, they feel out of control.
They remain in this unconscious state until one day the sound of the raging water awakens them, and they discover they’re five feet from Niagara Falls in a boat with no oars. At this point they say “Oh shoot!” But by then its too late. They’re going to take a fall.
Sometimes its an emotional fall. Sometimes its a physical fall. Sometimes its a financial fall. It’s likely that whatever challenges you have in your life currently could have been avoided by making some better decisions upstream.”

Well here are two things you can do today to stop drifting and start living an intentional life:
- First you need to DECIDE. Decide if what I’m saying is even important to you. Decide if you’re willing to put in the work to live a good life or if you’re going to roll your eyes and close out of this website.
- Still here? Great. Number two. Set a goal. Any goal. No matter how small. Think about your life and where you are now. What goals do you want to work towards? Do you want to find a new job? Do you want to start a business? Do you want to lose 20lbs? Figure out what goal has been nagging at you and set the intention to start working towards it.
Once you’ve decided on your goal, I strongly encourage you to write it down and post it somewhere you will see it regularly. Getting caught up in the day to day nuances of life can distract you from your goal, which is why it is so important to put it somewhere where you will see it and be reminded of what you’re working towards.
So today, I want you to stop drifting and start creating the life YOU want. There is a reason that books like Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” and Rick Warren’s “The Purpose Driven Life” are so popular. Your life demands direction and purpose.
Remember: This is your one life and there are no do overs, so make it count.
